The Reading and Discussion Guide is there for those who are too lazy to read the book, and are grasping for anything that can help them pass the assignment (INSTEAD of reading the book and LETTING their BRAINS do the work of UNDERSTANDING and comprehending the material)!
I would much RATHER READ the book and form MY OWN Thoughts, opinions, and ideas than to have the thoughts or opinions or viewpoints of another FORCED upon me by the Directed 'Reading and Discussion' section of any textbook.

It is annoying ! Another think I find annoying, is
after you've finished a book that you really really enjoyed,
sometimes they give you a sneak preview of what the
next book will be about. They get you hooked !
And then they tell you, it will only be available in 9 months !
Ugh !

They don't bother me at all and I rarely read them but if I were in a book club, I would certainly start there for the discussion.

Well...it should really just be for the teachers and there should be like a "Teachers' Edition" as a head-up. I don't read them though because it's like "Why this" or "What happened that"

I think the publishers add it so teachers will use it, they make more money off sales if teachers/professors force students to read it.
