I have an automatic ford escape that has had other engine problems before. While accelerating above 32 MPH the car runs fine but during the downshift there is a strong vibration I feel in the steering wheel when it hits 1800 RPM...it always happens at this RPM.

Take it in and have the trans fluid flushed that may cure the problem, sounds like chattering clutch packs to me.

If that doesnt cure it you might be in for a trans overhaul

Is this with braks applied ? if so it will be in the disc rotors.Try driving at the speed then take it out of gear to nuetral without anything applied let it coast and see if it still does it.If not do it again but this time in nuetral applie the brakes and see if it comes back ,If not then this will aliminate the brakes.
Check also the oil in the gear box this can cause it to slip up and down.
If in the gear box it could be a modulator valve I would strongly recomend that you take it to a automatic specialist to have them check it as it can do a lot of damage and be expensive if left unattended It may just need adjusting.
Hope this helps

I like to bet that the universal joints are getting a bit of play, or the shafts have a bit of slack in them. It could even be a case of the driveshaft or cv shaft being out of balance, and this is called a "harmonic", when everything resonates or wobbles at the right time, and is seems the worst. (Like in music when a certian note makes the room "boom")

If it always happens at 1800rpm in different gears, it's, obviously not rotors or the driveshaft or cv joints. The torque converter or harmonic balancer are possible culprits.

could be a transmission problem or you need to get ur rotors resurfaced. when u brake if the steering wheel shakes like if ur goin over 60 then yea its either ur rotors or u need to get ur tires alligned
