It may mean that if you build a baseball field in the middle of nowhere, people will come by to look at it. It may mean, that if you want a specific result, you have to take action to get it. If you don't "build it" or take any action, nothing is going to happen. Don't wait for things to happen to you, make them happen instead.

I think it had something to do with the greeks building the colossium. or some such thing. The idea was a question about the wisdom of such a huge project for entertainment sake, and the answer means as it says. Holds true today, no matter how huge or rediculous, if some one builds or invents something people will pay to see it or go to it.

From an economics point of view, this means "Give 'em what they want". Metaphysically, attracting people, either for business contacts or finding that certain someone, means that you should be the kind of person you want to attract.

"if you build it, they will come" is a metaphore which means you can't just sit around waiting on life to happen. You've got to get up, dust yourself off, and go out there and make it happen! Like in 'The Pursuit Of Happyness', he didn't just give up and wait on oppurtunity to knock, he MADE oppurtunity knock by creating a 'door' for oppurtunity to knock on. He built it, they came! :-)

Sometimes you have to follow your own instincts, no matter what other people think at the time. Afterward, they may come around to your way of thinking.
