I like to know about tipping these guys. Car hops at Sonic? The person that brings you your special request pizza at Ci-ci's Pizza?
What about the person who doesn't do a good job at a fancy restaurant. I have to wait for service. Sometimes I feel the bill I get is high enough.

I tip anywhere where they bring your food to you. Sonic and ci-ci's pizza both.
Also if a person gets tips at a restuarant their service will always be good. If they are bad at their job I give them a smaller tip. But not giving tips ticks them off and they start taking it out on others. So, I always tip even if they are bad. But if they are bad I only give them the 15% and if they are good I up that and if they are great I will give them up to 25% of the bill. It is worth it to get great service.

Generally I don't tip at fast food places. Those employees get at least minimum wage. However, at Sonic, with a car hop, I'll usually tell them to keep the change ... around a dollar or two sometimes. At a buffet restaurant, if there is a waitress who actually checks drinks, etc., we'll generally l leave $1 per person.

As to the fancy restaurant ... beware! You may be tipping on top of the tip! Read the fine print. Many menus say that the "gratuity is added to parties of six or more". Be aware that you DON'T have to pay that if you feel the service is worth it. But, also be prepared for an argument. I've done that once, when the waitperson pretty much ignored us and we got served cold food. This is a rather common occurrence around prom times and such, they really stick it to the kids sometimes.

I think that as far as the pizza/delivery charge slip goes - it's the same system. The driver uses those to bring up to the house and it just happens to be on the slip when you pick up as well. A tip is not necessary and shoud be understood. A lot of places that are unable to adjust their machines any other way will actually have their employees cross out that line so you don't feel like a doof. The only fast food places that I tip at are the ones that bring the food to my car, like Sonic. Especially when the girls are in roller skates and super polite. Otherwise, I don't. I used to throw in the rest of my change because I felt pressured to, but then I found out that my friend said that at the end of the night at Starbucks they all average about $12 an hour with those tips. Wow, that's quite a bit of a jump for a little over than minimum wage job that one accepted knowing the work and pay! Otherwise, I tip all services as normal, or above when deserved. I know what it's like to bring home a check for $0 every two weeks! You really got to hate it when someone says that tipping here is over the top when there are people who listen to that and don't realize that we make NOTHING an hour and have to pay taxes on the money that people spend. Sorry for the gripe on your question! As far as the answer with the jars being for charity - I think that we're talking about the ones with the tacky signs that say, "Tips accepted," with a smiley face. The donation jars have to be correctly and legally labeled.

Of course I do. Just because it is a fast food restaurant doesn't mean you dint have to tip. Although, except for a higher class restaurant, where gratuity is automatically added to your bill, It is really up to you whether you tip or not. But what most people don't realize is that leaving a few coins or a dollar "IS" an insult. I happen to know for a fact that while waitstaff are on the floor they "DO NOT" make minimum wage.....the standard wage is around $2.50 an hr. so they really depend on their tips. Plus, in some places they have to put their tips in a jar and share them. Nowadays, the going rate of a tip is 15% of your bill. That is not a lot of money and concidering how many people a waitress has to serve and all the crap she/he has to put up with it can become a very "thankless" job. Another thing you must consider is that much of what happens during your meal is not your server's fault. Dont take it out on your server if it takes a long time to get your meal or if the food is cold. They may be short-handed in the kitchen or may have someone in trainning or any number of things could be going on back there. Also, take into consideration how busy the restaurant is. If you take the time to notice what is going on around you during your meal, you should be able to get a feel of why your service isnt up to par. I usually figure at least 15% or maybe more for a tip, depending on the overall dining experience, not just the service.

I personally believe that etiquette shouldn't determine if we tip or not.Why can't the restaurant owners pay them a normal wage and let tipping really be something we do if we want to? I think it has gotten out of hand especially when someone doesn't give you good service and 15% is taken off the top.I know students frequently have these jobs and need some help but why don't the restaurant owners have to do their part?I do tip a little at sonic but not at the other fast food places.

I would not tip at a Fast Food Restaurant. The employees are trained to provide excellent customer service. At most fast food restaurants, the employees are not allowed to accept tips.
As for poor service at a fancy restaurant, I have been tempted not to leave a tip on the rare occasion that we receive bad service, but I have never had the nerve to do it. Sometime poor service is not the fault of the server, but is due to the kitchen staff, bartender, etc. Also, who knows what kind of day that server is having or what their financial situation is like. They are paid very low wages. Many of them are working their way through school or single mothers, etc. I think it's best to follow the golden rule in that situation. Treat them how you would want to be treated.

not sure about sonic.. and the people at ci-ci's only have to walk a few extra feet to give the pizza to you.. they didnt make the pizza or anything. so, no tip for them.. and if a person doesn't do a good job at waiting your table, then they don't deserve a tip. you have the choice on even tipping at all.. it's -optional-. =p

Eh, not really. I mean would you tip someone who leaves a cup or a jar in front of their register, when they take your order? I wouldn't. To me, just because you take my order it doesn't mean you get my tip. I don't care if you split it with the other people or not, but you don't deserve just because you did something simple as taking a person's order. It's just me, I've never done it yet so what makes you think I'll do it now?

The only time I tip is if I am getting my pizza delivered to my house, which I know the tip is in what they are already making. I believe it's the delivery charge. Or most restaurants.
