Totally cruel and barbaric.

Here in the UK children are not circumcised. We don't have any higher rates of diseases than anywhere else.

I've never understood the American fascination with chopping off foreskins. What on earth is supposed to be the point?

Personally, I'm not a fan of circumcision for several reasons. One, I'm an OB nurse and it's one of the most unpleasant aspects of my department. Everyone dreads circumcisions, even the doctors doing them. Second, my teenage nephew had a bad mishap with his circumcision as an infant that almost cost him his life. He's totally fine now. Mishaps rarely happen, but they do sometimes, and that is something to keep in mind. I tend to follow the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy, so I didn't circumcise my kids and they are all fine. The best advice I can give is the really do your research at reputable medical sites and search for pros and cons, advice on care of both intact and circumcised babies, and search for complications of both. Sure, your fiance had some trouble, but not all boys will. As far as if you do have him circumcised, a lot of it will depend on your doctor. Some doctors in some areas wait until 1 year old for general anesthesia, some will put them under at 6 or 9 months (although that is rare where I live). For smaller, younger children that can still be fitted to the circ-board they will often either use a topical numbing agent called EMLA (it doesn't work that well in my opinion) or they might give a local injection around the base of the penis. That way works better but not entirely, as the shot itself hurts and sometimes the doctor doesn't wait long enough for it to take effect. Sometimes in the newborn hospital period they will tell parents they use "pain relief" but they actually give a pacifier covered with a sugar-water solution. It *does* distract the baby a bit, but it doesn't kill the pain. I mean think about it, do you think sucking on a lolly-pop would take away any pain you might have? No. So if you do get it done, talk to the doctor about pain relief and what you can give him afterward (probably Tylenol) because he'll be sore every time he pees for a while (5 - 10 days or so). For what it's worth, my whole life I've only known one man who was uncircumcised who said he wished he was circed. I've known 3 who were circumcised who wish they had not been. So who knows really what your son would want. But if you leave him uncircumcised, he can always have it done later if he want. If you circumcise him and something goes wrong or he hates it as an adult, he can't go back and undo it. It's a difficult decision but I'm sure you'll make the right one for you and your son. Good luck!

Both of my boys were when they were born....mainly because of the health reasons, but also my personal feelings...I did not want for them to have to go through all of the stigma that goes along with being UNcircumcised as an adult. What I mean by this is all the times I'd heard other adult females talking about how gross it is...which of course I think is just ridiculous now that I am older. I agree with what someone said earlier....they should atleast give them some sort of pain med.

I think circumcision is a good idea....but I think not to give the babies pain medicine is barbaric.

If I had a son I would find a doctor who agreed with me before I let them circumcise him.

I believe it is mandatory for health reason.... Look at the people that didn't get the circumcision.. They were more likely to get ill than to stay healthy...

I was actually happy that I had girls so they wouldn't have to go through that painful procedure. Why doesn't society at least wait till they're older, anesthetize them, do the work, then wake 'em up. That'd be much more humane.

Cruel and barbaric, but they usually look nicer. It's purely subjective and depends what you want to do with it and how horny you are.
