There aren't too many drum brands out there. For a beginner that has never played drums before, I suggest a PDP set by DW. They are very nice drums for a very reasonable price. They sound great and can be easily customized. If you plan on playing the drums for a long time, I would get a more expensive set. Pearl makes some very nice sets from their basic EX kits to their MMX Masters sets. Pearl EX kits are nice and have many colors to choose from. I will suggest getting a basic 5 piece set with floortom, 2 rack toms, snare, and bass drum.

Here is an awesome website where you can order a 150 page catalog with everything inside it with the thousands of drum sets out there with pricing and a description.

If you really want to blow the bank, get DW drums. They make the best drums in the world.

But you need to remember to consider not just the set, but the cymbals, hardware, and drumheads and pedals.

Pearl makes good drums as do DW, Tama, Gretsch, Yamaha...Evans makes good drum heads not good drums and I've never seen any percussion equipment made by korg. If you're looking for electric go with the Roland V-drums if you can afford them...they are absolutely awesome. With drums, like anything else, you get what you pay for. However, if you are getting your first set stick with the lower end of the ones I mentioned...stay away from First Act and kits like that (if you can get it at Wal-Mart you don't want it).

well depends on your pocket aswell how much you intend to spend ona drum set - bearing in mind medium and higher end drum sets come without cymbals and sometimes without hardware either just the drums themselves.
do you intend on adding more drums to the set after buying it? if so compare the brands becase some charge alot more for add-on toms than others

i a pearl ELX drum set. my reasons for buying that set was because it is a middle of the range set- affordable very good set. the add on toms were not too expensive i love the colour of my set - blue mist- it was love at 1st sight! it jumped out at me ahead of all the other drum sets in the room because of its colour. it came with hardware but no cymbals. i bought those seperatly. it is a nice set of drums nice tones for rooms in houses and is giggable if necessary

i would have had a DW kit just as quickly but my drum shop didnt have contract with DW.
yamaha are good too but they can be alot more expensive depending upon the quality of set and wood type you buy off of them. premier are a middle of the range UK company and mapex have gotten alot better at making drums of recent times.

the thing is after your wallet has chosen you a price range its up to you and whats available as to what you get. choosing a drum set is a very personal thing to each drummer so just sit at a bunch of sets and try them for yourself!

DW makes the best sounding kits in general. But, they are expensive. Just look around. All the top brands make great drums. You will find what you want.
