Everyone else is correct...it is a TV thing. More specificly it is an advertizing dollars thing. The Red Wings are a top TV draw and because they are susceptable to early exits it makes for exciting hockey. The people who pay for ads get a large voice in who plays in the national telecasts. In the end though it really isnt an advantage...they still have to play a potential 7 game series within a certain time frame so the 2nd round can get underway. Some of the matchups where they play back to back in different arenas have a big travel advantage...the Wings-Flames matchup is across the entire continent and 3 time zones.

For one, the Pistons dont play at the Joe, they dont even play in the city. Two, I am sick of hearing what American fans think, what American fans want to see. I have lived in Detroit all my life, and cant stand afternoon games. It all because the networks want to show Detroit, they want to show Pittsburgh, and they have to be on seperate days, or seperate times, like today. The thing is, if the wings and flames go to 7 games, the last 4 games of the series will be played in 6 nights. Thats all got to do with what the TV networks want, not the Americans, you tool. I am sick of this American- Canadian crap, I am a hockey fan, I am not a fan of a country. It is a game, not politics, not a war, not an election. Besides, I like Canada, best bear around, and total nudity in their strip clubs. All I got to say about that is "OH CANADA" !!!!!!!!

The 2 biggest differences in play off schedules is rink availability and TV viewing. Mostly American TV. Americans like their hockey on Sunday afternoon treating it like a weekly football game. While hockey is more of a Saturday night sport.

Players hate it, as they are use to night games. A day game throws off their routine. Look for Hasek to have a bad start tomorrow.

I took a quick check of the JLA and couldn't find anything scheduled for tonight.

In 1997 the Wings swept the Ducks in the 2nd round. In 1998 the Wings swept the Ducks in the 1st round. In 2003 (I think) the Ducks swept the Wings in the 1st round. In those three series 5 of the 12 games went to overtime. No sweep this year.

I'm sure something is going on at the Arena today and they couldnt schedule it today, they don't have the playoff schedules set, like I know the Pistons play in the same arena as the Red Wings so it could be something like that (The Pistons arent playing tonight), but a lot of things go on at Joe Lewis Arena its probably a scheduling issue.

TV purposes, I suppose. Makes no sense. Those two teams get two days off between games in the same city, while Ottawa and Pittsburgh play back-to-back (today and tomorrow) in different cities.

WOW!! I am really surprised! When I saw this question I thought for sure when I went to read the answers all the Wings haters would have jumped on that by now.

I expected to see a lot of "because they are old and need the extra day of rest."

LOL!!!

Go Wings!!

We want Stanley!!!!!!!!

I heard they already had dwarf tossing scheduled for Saturday night at the Joe and since that's a bigger draw in Detroit, hockey had to be moved to Sunday.

Calgary was debating about forfeiting the next 3 games since they don't want to be swept and can't accept that they will lol
