They do a lot more than that. I use it as a phone also when something was wrong with the engine they ran a diagnostic test on it. They are there if you have an accident. And more.

The thing I wonder is how people who are too lazy to carry a spare key somehow remember the phone number (and account number, if you believe the commercials!) for OnStar.
