Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series. Mr. Connelly is a former LA Times Crime Beat reporter and he knows his stuff when it comes to writing murder. I would also recommend Nelson De Mille and Daniel Silva's Gabriel Allon series for some very advanced, slick books that are head and tails above the usual mystery crap out there. Then I would say go back to Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie and the Detective Noir geniuses of the 40's etc. Dashiell Hammet, Mickey Spillane et al. And do not forget Poe -the father of the modern Detective novel and Murders on the Rue Morgue - the original locked door scenario. And just for fun - the hilarious murder mysteries of Carl Hiaasen - expecially Lucky Me. He makes murder hilarious. Pax - C.
