I was going through my attic and I found a tube. When I opened it, I found a parchment-like piece of paper that is so fragile the sides are beginning to crumble. It is a copy of the Declaration of Independence for the United States. At this point, I'm not certain what to do to find out if it is real. Does anyone have any suggestions?

If you are in a large city, take it to a museum. They probaly have a professional that can evaluate the document for you. Call first and tell them what you have.

Carefully photograph it and copy it and keep the photos and copies in a safe place. Also, have someone witness that you have it.

Next, bring it to the nearest state museum and allow them to conduct an acid test on the paper and test the ink. This will help establish the age of the document. Don't let the document out of your sight.
