The water in the jug absorbs the rays from the sun and warms the water so that it gradually keeps the plants warm during the evening hours!

Filling jugs with water is for using with cold frames.
Placing plastic milk jugs filled with water on the north wall of the cold frame. .................

I know they make what is called a coldcap for the plant.

........This is what we use to do............
Cut the bottoms out make sure to keep the lids. Set the jug OVER the top of the plant when the weather warms take the lid off. For the night (when the temp is cooler) put the lids back on. We poked a hole in the top of the lid put string thru it and tied the other end to the jug handle. That way the lids didn't get lost.

Collect gallon milk jugs and two-liter bottles, cut off the bottoms, and place them over small plants. Remove the cap during the day to allow for ventilation, and replace it in the evening. Any small container will help protect your plants—boxes, clay flowerpots, even "hats" made from folded newspaper. Place the containers on the plants before dusk to keep in the day’s heat, and remove them at least partially in the morning.

I use these in my greenhouse. I paint them black so they absorb the heat - it's called a heat sink. The jugs collect the heat during the day and stay warm for quite awhile, keeping the plant protected and warm and also helps to warm the soil to help with growth.

Water collects solar heat during the day. Stays warmer through the night, keeping plants from freezing.

The heat from the sun will warm the water and the warmth should last through the cold parts of the day. The jugs also block the wind.
