According to the movie "flight of dragons" they eat cows but need a supplement of limestone rock to help keep their acidic stomaches in check.

They produce large amounts of gas which enables them to fly despite having small wings compared to their bodies.
When they expell this gas in order to land, an electrical charge produced in the back of their mouths ignites the gas and allows them to breathe fire.
