Since visible light is an analog phenomenon, then really the number of different shades of gray are infinite.
If you're talking about the realm of computer monitors and graphics, it would all depend on the granularity of the system.
Most black and white pixels are represented with an eight bit Byte, which is capable of having one of 256 distinct values. Thus for most of modern computer history, we've commonly thought of 256 shades of gray. In the earlier days, we used even fewer bits, yielding numbers of gray shades in integral exponents of two (256, for example, is 2 to the 8th power).
In many modern medical imaging systems you can find 12 bit black and white systems, primarily to reduce artifacts in the presentation of images on monitors. In a case like that you can achieve over 4000 shades of gray.
You are correct, though, that the human eye can distinguish only a much smaller number of shades than that.

Fifty Shades of Grey is basically a novel revolved around porn and sex. It includes whips and chains too! It is indeed a trilogy FSOG being the first book and the other two are called Fifty Shades Freed and Fifty Shades Darker. There is a movie currently in writing stage for it. So that will be coming soon. It's worth a read if your not squeamish about topics such as adressed in the trilogy. It could be categorized in Fiction and Romance. BQ: My favourite book of all time is Stieg Larsson's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. It is about a sociapathic girl and a journalist who try to uncover a crime within a well known family in Sweden where the book is based. I love the book because the character development is so precise and well written you almost feel like Lisbeth Salander (the sociapathic girl) while reading the novel. It's full of murder, mystery and love as well as politics but only a very small portion. I definitely recommend the book to anyone!

Fifty Shades of Grey is not in the same category as Hunger Games or Twilight. It's BDSM erotica. If you mother asks anyone at the book store for a recommendation for a teen, they will likely encourage her to purchase something else. I recommend the Trylle Trilogy by Amanda Hocking (starts with Switched) and Immortals by Alysson Noel (6 books, starts with Evermore). For something more along the lines of Hunger Games, try Divergent by Veronica Roth (2 volumes so far), Enclave by Ann Aguirre (2nd volume coming later this summer), or Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi (only one volume so far).
