The tree dropped its leaves after they developed black spots, and the diagnosis was "blight." We don't want to lose it, but would like to try and treat it ourselves at a more reasonable cost!

Are you sure it just didn't get caught in a cold snap after the 80 degree weather? That is what happened in our area.Lots of trees with dead leaves.But I think they will come back when it gets warm again.

Try Neem Oil, I know of one kind that should be available at places like Home Depot, called Neem Away.
Organic gardeners use it for alot of common garden problems, including Blight and nematoads.

Decide how old the tree is after reading this it may not be worth it.......
after so many years mine lasted 13 years lost { ***4***} in '06.
I'll never buy any more Bradford or Cleveland flowering pears again....
I waited for the sales and planted Pin Oak.
