awww what a sweet dog. plant some seed, co-op can tell you which is best for your area, then top with straw scattered around on top, cheapest way and works pretty fast. hey, that aint a coon dog is it?

Gravel works nicely. Find something visually appealing to you. The larger rocks (about 1/2 inch or an inch diameter) will probably work better than tiny pebbles as they don't scatter as easily. Or you can get bark chips if you prefer the look. As for grass I don't know. Dipping your dogs' legs in a bucket of water and then wiping with a dry cloth might pull the mud off more quickly than just a damp towel if you can't find a solution to the grass.

My suggestion is to not replace the grass, but instead use bark chips (non-toxic and digestible if your dog decides to eat them, versus pebbles that can cause problems). Partially landscape one section, preferably closer to a fence, to add a backdrop. Put a short see through fence around the plants to protect them from Destructive Dog until they establish themselves. Choose plants that are up to a beating from the animal once the fence is taken down. The other area can be the small wood chips, which can make a nice outdoor seating area. Unfortunately for those of us that own dogs, having a picture perfect yard is not always realistic. We can certainly make our yards nice looking, but with some limitations as to its use and wear. By the way, think of taking your dog for more exercise, doing tug of war at the park, tiring him out before he gets home. That way, he won't completely destroy the new landscaping while he is at home.

Getting the rolled grass (sod) is faster but a WHOLE lot more expensive. And if you don't take really good care of it, it will die in big patches....I don't recommend it.

I would get some seed. Look for seed especially for playgrounds. It grows really thick and hardy.

But as long as Fido is in the yard, the grass isn't going to grow very well. Consider investing in a kennel. You can buy them online (try craigslist in your area) pretty cheap or, you can get the chain link panels from Home Depot and put one together. If you have the money, get a concrete pad poured for the kennel. It's easier to clean. If that's too expensive, get a couple bags of lime, spread it on the ground inside the kennel then cover it with about 4 inches of large wood chips. The lime keeps the smell down and the wood chips are easy on the dogs feet and easy to scoop poop out of.

No matter what you do seed or sod if the dog gets to it !!!!!!!!!!
Fix a special area fenced for the dog so that the dog can't tear up the entire yard then plant seed.
Like I really know. I have about 1 1/2 acres and 2 of our 3 dogs have dug more holes than a group of prairie dogs or meerkats. But we do have grass not mud...........just ankle breaking size holes.

I had the same problem. You have to get sod. In Florida a "pallet" costs about $150 and covers about 100 sq feet. The seeds take too long and your dog will still tear it up. Get the sod and keep the dog away from the sod for about 2-3 weeks. Once the sod has a foot hold you won't have the problem anymore. Unless your dog is a digger like my two are. But we worked it out and they don't dig anymore and my grass is awesome! and no more dirt in the house.

In your situation, I would get a couple of bails of quality hay. Spread it around the yard and the grass will grow out of the seed in it. As long as you have a dog, I would not spend the money on sod or expensive seeds.

Grass seed is more economical than sod. But wont the dof just tear up the new grass as well? My neighbor planted some tough grass the seemed to withstand alot of abuse from kids, dogs, bikes etc. You might want to ask them when you go to get seed or sod, if there is a variety of grass for your needs.

Cheapest would be grass seed. Make a run for your dog with gravel. It is cheap and will save your lawn in the future.
