Living near a base I can tell you, it was the last straw.
Any support he had in the military is gone now.
These troops have been going through hell and
extending the tours shows the command doesn't care.

The "Surge" has proven to be the most shortsighted piece of strategy since Rummy decided not to guard Iraqi Ammunition Depots allowing thousands of tons of explosives to fall to the insurgents.

How would that garner support for the troops and Iraq? People are already opposed to our troops being there and against the surge, why would making them stay longer improve the support?

I think it was just a way to lengthen the tours, in hopes the troops will do fewer tours.

No, it's a reality of logistics.

He wants the troops to do X amount of work. But there aren't enough troops enlisted and deployable to do everything he wants, especially since he keeps escalating the conflict.

So, since he doesn't have more troops to send, he needs to lengthen the amount of time (and work) the current troops are doing.

He's trying to use it as a tool to blackmail congress into giving him money with no questions asked. The reality is that he was forced to do this because he has bitten off way more than the army can chew and now must force them to sacrifice even more for his lack of judgment.

No. I love how you folks forget to mention that time between deployments has been lengthened as well. You do know that they will receive $1000 a month extra for being deployed to specific locations, correct?
