I have a 1998 Mercury Sable and the other day it quit running while driving. Had new altenator put on and a new batt put in (by family). Car still won't run, won't even turn on. What else could be the problem?

Thanks everyone for the advice. I was just looking for some ideas to tell my husband who is currently 1 hr away and working on the car. As for the rude comments some of you left...those were not called for.

The problem could be about 500 different things. Do you really think someone on Yahoo can tell you what's wrong with no details whatsoever? This isn't the psychic hotline.

im not sure it could be a number of things that happened.if the car will turn over but not start i would first look at maybe one of your coil packs have went out which runs with your ignition system, but one thing also it might be your fuel pump, you will just have to troubleshoot it,you can turn your key on and listen real good and you will hear a buzz from the back if the fuel pump is working inside your tank ,but thats no promie its not bad,but i hope it helped there is just really no way of knowing like i said could be a number of things

Is the new battery good? Check the voltage? Make sure, real sure that you have a good grounding circuit. Check your battery cables as tight on the battery posts. Put your hands on the battery cables and trace them out. I have seen cables break in the middle. Use a meter and check for resistance on disconnected cables. I did say disconnected and isolated didn't I? Check all your fuses? This is probably going to be a simple fix, but might be hard to find. Might want to get some one who knows what they are doing to check it out.

Unknown. Instead of relying on your family to solve the problem for you, take it to a mechanic who can diagnose and fix it for you.

Sounds like a failure of the engine electronics. You are unlikely to be able to fix that by yourself.
