I think the corporate suits felt as if they had to do something to avoid the negative media attention that Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would have directed at them. In essence, this will most likely end up being a proverbial "slap on the wrist". Howard Stern has said far worse, but the corporate suits make it clear that his opinions are his and not the company's. Howard's ratings have always done well and sponsors fight to get a spot in his show. Imus is no different, except for the fact that the company didn't have a backbone.
