1) Sometimes it's easier for the audience to say or remember. If you were born Molodan Sekulovich, wouldn't you think Karl Malden was a better moniker for public consumption?
2) Sometimes an agent decides it for you, based on no good reason.
3) Union rules are that you cannot have the same precise name as another actor, so anyone born Marilyn Monroe is going to have to (at minimum) include a middle initial. And if my name was that close to someone of that stature, I think I'd go for a completely different first or last--Marilyn F. Monroe or Thomas P. Hanks just wouldn't scan right in the credits.

Many actors use stage names to stand out and be remembered. No one will remember Susan Smith, but a name like Jenna Jameson will get noticed much better.

Many people got real names that are hard to pronounce or remember. Some people have real names that too common and don't sound interesting.
Last but not least - girls tend to get married and change their real name. You don't want all the glory to go away with your maiden (or previous husband's) name - you either keep your maiden name as a stage name, or you use some other name to begin with.

most of the time i`ts because actors have weird or common names and would like a name that is better remembered.Another reason would be that an agent comes up with a name that better suits the actor. There are other reasons but this answer would be very long if i listed them all.

There are in elementary words 2 valid motives for replacing you call for degree or demonstrate: !. Your real call is already taken by technique of yet another actor/performer, or B. Your real call is too complicated on your target market to pronounce. the different motives aren't from now on motives...they're excuses to serve another objective on your time table.

Another good reason is privacy. When one is known by a stage name, his or her children can register for things without anyone's knowing whose they are, for example.
