the copywright term for music and poetry (lyrics) follow the same rules. in the case of people adding new words to old songs, the new words have full copyright even if the music is public domain. "Land of Hope and Glory" is an example. Pop songs and songs from musicals, it is common for the composer and lyracists to go together on copyrights.

for most modern works, the copyright is based on the lifetime of the composer plus 70 years in the US and EU countries. Works first published in the US prior to 1924 are public domain. Certain other newer works may be in public domain for various reasons, such as non-renewal, but that is not common.

A church hymn book makes interesting reading as they normally credit both the music and lyric sources, and show permission statements if copyrighted.
