Abraham Lincoln practiced law for nearly twenty-five years in the Illinois courts. Other than part-time service in the Illinois legislature and the United States Congress, law was his full-time occupation. Lincoln handled cases in almost all court levels: justice of the peace, county, circuit, appellate, and federal. He had three successive formal partnerships: junior partner to John Todd Stuart (1837-1841), junior partner to Stephen T. Logan (1841-1844), and senior partner to William H. Herndon (1844-1861). Like many of his colleagues at the bar, Lincoln was a general practice attorney and represented clients in a variety of civil and criminal actions including debt, slander, divorce, dower and partition, mortgage foreclosure, and murder.

He was a Railroad Industry attorney. He specialized in getting tax breaks for his clients.
To show you a bit of Lincoln's personality and gumption, after once saving a client a substantial amount of money from taxes. Lincoln presented his client with his bill for $2,000 for services rendered. The client balked, and said he would not pay such an expensive amount. He told the client to give him back the invoice so he could revise and adjust it.
Lincoln then gave the client a bill for $5,000.
The client eventually paid the latter bill.

He had three law partners overall. He never practiced law without a partner. He enjoyed "riding the circuit" which meant travelling to the various county courthouses to try cases. He tried all kinds of cases, including defamation of character cases, which were a popular altenative to duelling, which had been declared illegal. He defended at least one man, Jack Armstrong, in a murder trial at Beardstown, Illinois--a very sensational trial it was--and yes, he proved the young man innocent in the very best Perry Mason like style.
He also represented plaintiffs and defendants in civil suits, for everything from breach of contract to injuries from an assault. He defended one farmer who had killed a vicious dog with a pitchfork. The plaintiff demanded restitution, asking "Why couldn't the defendant have come after my dog with the other end of his pitchfork?" to which Lincoln replied, "Why didn't your dog come after him with his other end?" There are many examples of this type of courtroom humor that Lincoln employed to win cases.
Probably the most important two cases he won involved the Illinois Central Railroad. Lincoln was able to win a case that the State of Illinois had persued involving paying property tax on railroad right-of-way. The ICCR balked when they got Lincoln's bill for $7000, saying they could have gotten a fancy lawyer from the East for that amount. Lincoln took them to court, and won the settlement against them. It was this $7000 that he used to finance his bid for the Illinois Senate, which was his stepping stone to the Presidency.
