Your dog has never done anything wrong to you.
Your partner proberbly has.
This is kinda mean though.
The partner knows what is going on, so should be able to save themself.
The dog however doesnt know what is happening and will get paniced.
The dogs dying moments would be spent scared and wondering why it only friend deserted it, when its always stuck by them.
the dog.

More than likely, any partner I have would be younger than me, and can fend for himself. A 14 year old dog may need some help getting out.

My dog is 8 years old and has risked his life for me and was injured in the process. I would NEVER leave him behind.

BTW-There are a LOT more faithful dogs in this world than there are faithful partners.

Edit: 5 hrs. later

There was a story on the news tonight about 14 yr old girl who fell into the river and they credit her dog for saving her life. The dog was able to get the attention of a police officer. They showed the rescue on TV.

I've been in a fire, the house quickly fills up with smoke and you're not going to be able to find any pets, nevermind save them if they go into hiding.

But in your hypothetical scenario, I would save my partner. Age is the primary reason. A 14+ year old dog is probably going to die anyway in a few years, but my partner should live or 20-40 more.

If it were a choice between a 3 year old dog and a 95 year old person, then I'd choose the dog.

If you are planning a fire for tonight, leave the dog at a friend's house ahead of time. As for the partner, how are getting along lately? Let your conscience be your guide.

My partner of course. I would hate to leave behind my faithful old dog, but human beings are just a little more important.

You are very much in need of help if you cannot figure that one out for your self.
Suggest you have a trip to the doctors tomorrow morning and see if he can prescribe you some happy pills.
Better still, solve every ones problem, just stay in the fire struck house cuddling your dog.
PS Sounds as if he would have the bigger problem having to decide between two dogs.
