Did you keep up with the maintenance (tune up, in particular)? If you did, then it's probably a minor problem, like a loose gas cap. You need to tighten the cap until you hear a click or two.

You can take your car to AutoZone - they will read the trouble code from your car and offer some suggestions. You can also buy your own code reader - a decent one costs $100 and is simple to use - directions are provided and are straight forward. You can use the code reader to turn off the malfunction indicator lamp. It will come back on later if the problem wasn't fixed.

There are a lot of reasons why it comes on.. anything from a loose gas cap, to a bad spark plug wire... most auto parts stores will scan it for free & tell you what made it come on... be sure to write down what they tell you.. it will be a code, like P442 which is an evap system leak usually caused by a gas cap that isn't sealing... or it might say something like H2O2 Voltage high or shorted to ground.. which usually means a bad oxygen sensor... have it scanned & let me know what they say...good luck.. justme23005

It could come on for many reasons.... goto your local auto store and get it scanned, it is free, then they will tell you the code and what to replace. The light came on for a reason, so fix your car the right way.
