I want to be able to transplant them once they are big enough, but I want them to be strong. They tend to grow very thinly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you are growing them indoors in pots and they tend to get tall thin and leggy they are not getting enough light.Move them to your lightest brightest south facing window.
If they still are not getting enough light you will need to put them outside during the day in a bright but protected location.
You need to gradually move them outside like this to toughen them up anyway. They need breezes to toughen the stems.
If they are tomatoes you can remove most of the leaves come transplant time and plant them much deeper than they were in the pots. They will develop roots all along the stem that is buried and will be very strong.
Hope that helps good luck!

To get the strongest and shorter seedling you will need 12 hours of light. The lack of light is the reason many seedling are long and thin and leggy. This is the most important thing I've learn about growing seedling for 30 years.

First get the seeds and put them between two DAMP paper towels which will make them grow faster. Damp the paper towels every few days and put it near sunlight. After a few roots grew pace them in the soil and put LOTS of fertelizar.
Good Luck

After your seeds sprouted, give them lots of bright light, everytime you give water, do it from bottom and add weak fertilizer (1/4 tsp fertilizer per 1 galon water). They also need moving air, you can use electric small fan for this but set on low first. With this fan, they will grow bigger stem.
