Pull the fuel pump relay. Start the engine, and let it run until it stalls, when all the residual fuel is depleted.

At work, when I do a fuel filter, I take the gas cap off, and then do it. It will still leak fuel however (not enough to be pouring out, but there will be a continious trickle) so be sure you have a drip pan if you do it this way, usually the easiest, and healthiest for the vehicle. Letting the vehicle run dry of fuel is hard on the fuel system, and its hard on the engine. By opening the gas cap, and then (being quick when) changing the fuel filter, you are letting the least amount of air into the system, and it will be easier on the system after the new one is installed and the vehicle is cranked over until started (it will still take a few more seconds and cranks until it starts so be warned).

When I change a fuel filter, I have a hoist and a (large) drain pan so I do not spill any on the ground, and since I am not lying on the floor, I can get it done with losign the minimal amount of fuel.

The gas cap is pressure regulated, like a radiator cap, when it is removed, the system has an open and the inside tank pressure, and the outside atmostpheric pressure becomes the same.

Its primarily a safety issue. If your engine is hot, fuel spilled on a hot surface could ignite. Gas in your eyes is really no fun at all and a mouthful of gas isn't too nifty either. For some people fuel on the skin can cause some nasty problems. Disabling the fuel pump circuit is also a safety issue. If any one decided to turn the key on while working on the fuel filter you are going to get a healthy shot of fuel all over the place. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Fuel pressure test port on the top of the engine. It is part of the fuel rail. It looks kind of like a valve stem for a tire. Take its cap off and push on the core carefully (wear safety glasses). This will relieve the pressure. Make sure there are no ignition sources nearby when releasing the pressure or removing the fuel filter.

There are lots of proper ways, but most people just stuff a cotton rag around the test port that looks like a tire valve on the fuel line near the injectors, and bleed the pressure out.

The pressure relief valve on the fuel rail... it looks like a stim like on a tire and works the same way, give it a poke and the fuel will squirt out, so be careful... if you cant find it, take the fuel pump relay out and run the car until it stalls, than the pressure will be relieved

simply undo the gas cap then replace it...this will relieve the pressure on the fuel system so you can replace the filter.
