Imagination is all the infinite possibilities in reality.
Since some of our ideas seem so far-fetched and imaginary (no chance of being real).
We see it as imagination, instead of how it fits into the big picture. Our mind being able to somewhat tap into all the infinite possibilities of the universe.

I like Sartre's definition of imagination. He said that the difference between perceiving a horse and imagining a horse is 'nothing'. In other words, imagination is pure negation, it's what inserts truth and falsehood into the world. So, imagination is perceiving what is not, rather than what is.

There are a lot of answers to this question and I am not sure whether I can going to say something new.

imagination is the ability to build a "reality" that is not physical,
imagination can only consist of things that are physical or be an object that has fundamental parts that are part of the physical reality.

another view is that imagination is a link between an entity that is not part of the physical world and that which is.

It's your mind thinking about what could be, might be, should be, but that which will never be, or won't be for awhile, or possibly might happen or maybe not. It's so much fun to imagine what could be, think about what might be, because we have total control. Living, however, is dealing with what is, and ultimately that is far more dynamic and challenging.

For me it's letting my mind take me to places I've never been. It's doing the impossible, becoming that person I've always wanted to be. Telling myself a story and taking part in it. I hope one always hangs on to their imagination, it's a wonderful gift ready to be used at a whim! Enjoy yours!
