A big thing for me is that its practical and not slutty! My boyfriend bought me bright red lacy stuff and a suspender belt....its never been out of my draw!
You can't really go wrong if you keep it feminine and simple. Ann Summers is probably the best place to go as the people in there are well equipped to advise. But if you don't want to go into a shop the website is easy to navigate too!
I personally recommend Spanish Rose or Cherry Picking :)

Right - think of what you, as a man, likes lingerie wise. Then buy the complete opposite and she'll probably like it! Just so we're clear - crotchless is NOT good!
