Get a herbicide that says poison ivy on the label. Using a paint brush, paint the leaves with the killer. Leave it alone for a couple of days. The leaves should have dried up. Now cut the main stem just above the soil.
Watch the area and if you see any new growth (leaves), paint them before the plant grows much.
If the plant is small and you are not allergic, wear disposable rubber gloves and pull the plants. I have done this and can get rid of poison ivy quickly and easily. Watch burning the plants as this will release the oil. Holding the plant, grab the glove at the wrist and pull it over the hand and plant in one movement. Place in an out--of-the-way spot. Once left for a week or two, I place in the garbage and let the trash company take them away. This way, the plants are dead and they will be buried, so that they can't hurt anyone.

Poison Ivy is classified as "woody brush" and is best controlled with a Selective Herbicide. Concentrated Triple Threat broadleaf selective weed killer will kill Poison Ivy. Triple Threat also has a residual effect meaning poison ivy will not grow back for 2-4 weeks.
Glyphosate Roundup does not have a residual effect and poison ivy will grow back sooner.
You can buy Triple Threat with no shipping charges at;

Roundup but if you have a huge tree of ivy then you need a woody stemmed herbicide such as Weedone.
The organic way is to get a goat. Goats love poison ivy just dont pet them or you will get a rash.

even mixing round up really strong wont permanently kill poison ivy. the best way i found to kill it is with salt. find where the vines enter the ground and apply a liberal amount of salt all the way around the vine. repeat after a good rain. the only problem with this is salt will kill everything in a area of about 1 square foot in diameter.

Round Up is as good as any. You should spray the leaves and the vines. When the plant is dead you should physically remove it using gloves. Poison Ivy is still toxic when dead. Don't burn it either.
