1. Don’t smoke any number or any kind of cigarette. Smoking even a few cigarettes a day can hurt your health. If you try to smoke fewer cigarettes, but do not stop completely, soon you’ll be smoking the same amount again.

Smoking "low-tar, low-nicotine" cigarettes usually does little good, either. Because nicotine is so addictive, if you switch to lower-nicotine brands you’ll likely just puff harder, longer, and more often on each cigarette. The only safe choice is to quit completely.

2. Write down why you want to quit. Do you want to—

Feel in control of you life?
Have better health?
Set a good example for your children?
Protect your family from breathing other people’s smoke?
Really wanting to quit smoking is very important to how much success you will have in quitting. Smokers who live after a heart attack are the most likely to quit for good—they're very motivated. Find a reason for quitting before you have no choice.

3. Know that it will take effort to quit smoking. Nicotine is habit forming. Half of the battle in quitting is knowing you need to quit. This knowledge will help you be more able to deal with the symptoms of withdrawal that can occur, such as bad moods and really wanting to smoke. There are many ways smokers quit, including using nicotine replacement products (gum and patches), but there is no easy way. Nearly all smokers have some feelings of nicotine withdrawal when they try to quit. Give yourself a month to get over these feelings. Take quitting one day at a time, even one minute at a time—whatever you need to succeed.

4. Half of all adult smokers have quit, so you can— too. That’s the good news. There are millions of people alive today who have learned to face life without a cigarette. For staying healthy, quitting smoking is the best step you can take.

5. Get help if you need it. Many groups offer written materials, programs, and advice to help smokers quit for good. Your doctor or dentist is also a good source of help and support. See a list of National Groups with information and resources on how to quit.

I know its hard, I could never completely quit when I was pregnant and I tried everything I could that wouldn't hurt the baby more. I still feel incredibly guilty for not quiting. Try getting accupunture, that did help me quit for a couple weeks. You may have better luck. Also if your spouse/boyfriend smokes make him stop. Its so hard to stop when you are around it. If you have friends who smoke stay away from them for a couple weeks. Also no matter how many times you fail keep trying. Whenever you quit you are still helping your baby.

And to whoever said its selfish **** you. I tried so freaking hard to quit. It might seem selfish to someone who has never smoked but to those of us who have we know it the hardest thing we've ever done. I would rather have been in hard labor for the entire length of my pregnancy than smoked a single cigarette.

And for anyone who thinks I'm an awful person or in case you don't manage to quit, after I quit breastfeeding I got on zyban and quit smoking three weeks later. It really helps with the cravings, but I don't think you can take it when your pregnant. I always thought it would be so much easier to quit smoking once I got pregnant. If anything its harder. But just keep trying every day. You CAN do it.

You know what? I quit for seven years 'cause I felt I just had to for everyone else's sake! and every day I craved one, even in my sleep! Then after another seven years of smoking, I took a pill called "Zyban" or "Wellbutin" for six months and never once had a craving for it again... and that was almost ten years ago... I hear there is an ever better one out but you'd have to check with a doctor as I don't remember the name of it... What this does is undo the damage done in your pleasure point in the brain and makes it like it never ever had become addicted to it in the first place and it also takes care of any form of depression you might have had because of it or whatever other myriads of reason people have to get depressed today!!! Not to say that a pill Will change the world around us but if it can make our lives easier by allowing us to be cigarette-free, we can then at least chose who we will be a slave to instead of being dictated by a big filthy corporation who lied to us from the start as they knew very well that the literal suckers that we are would all get addicted to their evil product!!!
When you take these pills... you can still smoke but by the second week, you won't even want to already!!! If you were to quit the pill immediately however, the craving would come back but if you go the full six months, it won't!!!
Right now, to lessen your urge to smoke, you can take "Life's" One a Day Vitamin which has four stars as opposed to "Centrum" which has only one half of a star cause it doesn't break down in the body and contains stuff that no one should ingest daily regularly at all... and drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water daily and nothing else will do as everything else, any liquid of any kind has its own agenda in your body whereas water, and only fresh water will do for a myriad of benefial reasons such as flush out the toxins, energize your living cells, heal you of so much! Please don't tell the food and drug association! who will then begin to call it a Drug and charge us an arm and a leg for it!!!
And I do know one at least who took not only Zyban while she was pregnant but medication that even the doctors were worried that there might be something seriously wrong with the baby but when it did... they all agreed that this baby was "perfect" in every way they could possibly figure to test it with!!! You still have to go through your doctor for the prescription and could tell you more!!!
Vitamin C and E heap too... Put a dab of orange pure essential oil (just one drop!) in your rooms and even that will begin to help!!!
One more very important thing... Try to eat the biggest breakfasts you can think of... even meats, fish, eggs... the works and when it comes to the last meal of the day, if you could remember to eat only vegetables, you have no idea how good you will begin to feel... For lunch, eat what you want except for anything that's got "fructose" in it!!! A little butter but no margarine ever! Cold-pressed olive oil in your salads with a bit of lemon juice from a fresh lemon and just try to eat as fresh as possible!!! Not always the easiest I know but oh! so good!

YOU ARE AWESOME and YOU CAN DO IT! quitting is the best thing you can do for yourself and your baby! i did it. it was sooooo hard and i swear i was going to give myself an ulcer on top of everything else. i smoked for 10 years, a pack a day. and after i found out, i quit cold turkey. i chewed gum. at first it was so hard, i just cried because i was so flustered. but then i kept thinking about my baby and looking at her ultrasound and my grandma smoked with my mom and she was really tiny when she was born and i just figured that no matter how hard it was, i wanted to make sure i wasn't hurting her. some people can't quit completely. but really, i was had such bad morning sickness, it was way better i quit then. now that i had my baby (she was a very healthy 8 lbs and very healthy!) i still miss smoking, especially when i have a drink but i just look at her and i can stand somewhere where other people are smoking and they smell bad. but, this sounds crazy, i like the smell of the smoke when i'm outside but i hate the smell on me! cut back as much as possible and if you can't quit, do what you can! you will fee wonderful for helping your baby! best of luck!

The only way I quit smoking was getting pregnant. No - I didn't get pregnant to quit smoking. However, thinking of the little baby inside of me - and it's pure and innocent body forming inside of me made me quit because I didn't want to hurt my baby. I wanted it to be perfect - without any harmful things that I may have caused.
Maybe the next time you get an ultrasound - take the picture and copy it, and put it in the celephane of your ciggarette pack, and that will remind you of why you are quitting.

I tried a million ways before I could finally quit but being pregnant can make it more complicated because you probably shouldn't use patches or gum with nicotine. Some of my tricks :
set a date in advance and said that was the day I would quit .
would locate things that could give my mouth activities ie celery and carrot sticks . toothpicks..baby pacifier tied around my neck...
study pictures of lung cancer over and over to remind my self how bad smoking was
keep a jar with a 1/4 cup of h2o and put all your cigs out in it for a 2 day period. with lid on carry it with you to remind you that is in you and your baby. sniff it if desparate.
Go places were smoking is not allowed
KEEP TRYing to quit even if it doesn't work

personally being pregnant in itself made me kick the habit because i couldn't stand the smell. But if you're really addicted, then i would recommend you talk to your doctor about the options. also, try eating sunflower seeds or pumpkin seed that have to be shelled. This keeps your hands busy. I would suggest you find some candies and/or snacks that keep your hands and mouth busy so you smoke less. That worked for me several years ago.

Here's a link to Washington States tobacco quit site http://www.quitline.com/

Just a note about the ultralights. Studies have shown that you don't actually get any less nicotine or tar with them. Your body compensates by inhaling more deeply with that type than regular, and tobacco companies have had to quit marketing them as a safer alternative to regular strength cigarettes because the truth is that they're not.
