The car upon start up makes this funny tapping noise which eventually fades after car has warmed up. Checked the oil and it does not need topping up any ideas what it could be it has only done 89000 and has full Merc Service

A lifter is getting tired. You didn't use thicker oil because some idiot told you it was better did you? Mechanics love to make oil pressure better by using thicker oil.

Its a starvation of oil circulating around the engine.Most 16v engines have this problem.If the noise fades after warm up,then there is no problem.If there was excess ware on the cam shaft or followers then the noise would not go away.Nothing to worry about,it is a characteristic of the engine.

Cant help but i had a C280 Sport that used to do the same thing so i would interested to know what others think it might be!

Never worked on this engine but it sounds like (if you have them) a collapsed hydraulic tappet or worn cam follower.

Is it a fast and sharp "ticking" noise?
