First, not EVERY turtle does the "back to the beach thing". For those that do, there is no convincing explanation of how they do it. Some salmon species exhibit the same behavior, except their place of birth is in some freshwater stream.

Instinct.
Just like the salmons that go out into the ocean and then return to the same tributary in which they were born.
It's amazing and mind boggling.
