Lack of sleep over time impairs your thinking, response time and over a real long time you can start getting hallucinations and distorted thinking. Sleep is our body's way of repairing itself mentally and physically. Hormones are released when you get enough deep sleep that help repair cells in your body. Sleeping also is like a defrag for your computer it allows your brain to process and rearraigned stuff in your head about things going on during the day. So that the next day things run smoother.

There are two things that make good sleep, enough sleep and consistent sleep (like 7 to 8 hours every night not 5 one day 8 the next 4 the next 10 hours on Saturday.) If you try to get consistent good sleep you'll feel better. Of course, life constantly interfers so I often end up feeling craky and dull some days or weeks but if I manage to do my own suggestion, I feel like a human being most days.
At 19 sleep was more of a hobby than a consistent thing for me so Good Luck :)

If you are not already suffering from a brain injury, staying awake causes your brain to shut down temporarily. Your reactions are exactly what you would experience. It is not permanent, so be assured, you haven't damaged your brain.

I have a brain injury and for the first 6 months after that injury, I could go as much as 3 weeks without sleep (I lack the ability to feel sleepy now). While I do get more sleep now (average 4 hours nightly), I have permanent insomnia. I get very severe headaches and more problems with vision (eyes need rest), but other than that, it doesn't make my brain any worse.

Your physique will crash and additionally you will bypass out formerly any everlasting harm might nicely be accomplished. it is not an issue of will ability, your physique only shuts down. regardless of drugs and somebody forcing you wakeful, your physique will start up microsleeping. The longer you reside wakeful, the fewer time your physique will take to start going into REM sleep. those micronaps would be organic REM sleep, and that they're going to shop going even with your meds and somebody forcing you wakeful till your physique crashes as above.

your brain needs rest. it was unable to perform well at the time. that's just about it.

and sleeping at 4-5am until 12pm is not insomnia. that's 7-8 hours of sleep per night. far from having sleeping issues.

First, that would depend upon the reason for your staying awake (illness, drugs, etc).

If it just happened, and it was only once, you should be fine.
