Do you ask for a raise when you've been given more responsibility than when you were originally hired? If so, how do you go about it?

I've worked in this company for 3 years... the first 2 years I was in one state & then transferred to their "new" establishment in another state (where I have been for the past year).

I'd say in the past 6mos, I have been given extra responsibilties that are not in my "job description". There are 3 other people in my position & they have the same added responsibilities as me except for one. I am the only one with that added responsibility.

Just tell the boss that you have been given more responsibility and are up for the challenge of having more to do, but you feel that you should be fairly compensated for doing more. A good boss will understand that and should help you out, or at least give you a really good reason why you're not getting a raise.

You may want to wait a bit after you've had the additional responsibilities. That way you can document your progress with these new responsibilities and basically build a case for why you deserve a raise.

You can always ask, and might get it, or they might feel that what you're doing is what they had in mind when they hired you.

Make a list of the new things you are doing, and anything you've done "over and above" job requirements or have done especially well, and talk to your boss and give him or her the list.

Good luck.
