There isn't any more I'm afraid... you used to be able to check the network by the prefix before mobile number porting was allowed as each network has its own set prefixes. However, its now easy enough to just go to your operator and ask for your PAC code and take the number to another network. So, I guess to answer your question, you can tell what network the number was on originally by looking at it... best bet if you really need to know is to phone the BT operator from a landline and ask... thats what i used to do before I had cross-network minutes. :-)

orignally yes operators have patterns, like 079 for orange 0775 for o2, 0777 for voda and 078 for 3, but due to number portability any number could be on any network- my num 077 has been on all networks except 3

Once a person has a mobile number they can transfer it to any network, my number has been on Orange, Virgin, 3 and Tesco.

If you can be certain the phone is off or currently in use you could try and ring it. You might get a pre-recorded message like "Welcome to Orange Answer phone" which would tell you.

0771-0778 mmo2(o2)
0772-0787 vodafone
0793-0799 t-mobile (and virgin and easy mobile)
078xxxxxx orange
allthough this has changed as my number is 07766xxxxxx for vodafone and my missus is 07876 for vodafone and my spare is 07810xxxxxx
now days it's dependant on whats left

yeah you can tell, but the only ones I know are that 077 is O2 and 079 is usually t-mobile
