It mean's they're gay, and not hiding it anymore.

It means they are revealing something about themselves that they kept hidden.
Today when someone is said to come out of the closet they usually mean they are letting others know they are gay,

It means for gay, bi, or lesbians, maybe transgenderd people to come out to their friends and family, and/or society.
I guess it could mean some other things, but that is the most common definition.

it generally refers to gay people who had been hiding thier orientation who decide to reveal themselves publically as being gay. however, it can mean to publically reveal anything you've been hiding; such as smoking.
