I work for the largest company in the bay area. I told my boss that I was going to need two upcoming operations and a few days later she said that my performance was lacking & I needed to find another job within the company. Is that legal?

It depends on your state laws. You need to contact your local Equal Employment Opportunity Commission office. They will know what your rights are in this situation.

They can lay you off for not being able to come to work, or not being able to do the job.

Actually, pretty much everywhere in the US is "employment at will" which means that if you don't have some kind of a contract that says otherwise, they don't need a reason to lay you off, can just do it for no reason at all. and it's legal., as long as the reason isn't for some prohibited reason like your gender or race.

yes, my company doesn't hire people who smoke cigarettes. If you work for the company and smoke cigarettes, even at your own home off premises, you will get fired. Its a liability for the company because smokers are prone to more illness and would eat up the healthcare benefits money.

Read your employment contract carefully. It's possible your ability to perform your duty is directly related to your production.

Good luck...

Only if your performance was actually lacking. Does not sound like it was. Go to your HR Department and tell them what happened.
