Well, if you're looking for board or card games with that theme, check out this link:

Betrayal on the House on the Hill is the best example I can think of, the first half of the game is all about exploring the house. (Think Scooby-Doo rated PG-13 or R.) The first half of the game you want to explorer a haunted mansion and get ready as possible for the second half, when one of 50 scenarios gets chosen and one player becomes the bad guy!

Another game with a heavy exploration theme is Starfarers of Cataan. You have to explorer the game's galaxy to find the best places to put your colonies, and you have to do it fast, since all the other players are doing the same.

The Dungeoner card games has an exploration componet too.

well the only thing i can think of is nexus ops, which is a strategy game, but heres the synopsis thing - Deep-space explorers have discovered an abundance of valuable rubium on a distant moon. Gaining control of it is a job for you and your mercenary strike force. But word leaked out, and now the moon is up for grabs. Competing corporations are shipping in mercenaries from all over the sector. The quickest way to get the upper hand in this fight will be to enlist the aid of the native life -- towering creatures who understand the value of might, who know the terrain, and who fight like hellcats. Battles will rage around the rubium mines and the great monolith. Your employer wants the rubium -- and doesn't care how you get it! - so it kinda has to do with exploring. but i would recommend it

Lost Cities and Tikal

(Those are 2 of the more popular exploration themed games on BoardGameGeek.com)

Lost Cities is a 2 player card game, where the object is to earn points by getting and playing as many cards of a suit as possible (each suit represents a expedition to a different location, for example the blue suit is an underwater expedition to an Atlantis-like site).

Tikal is a board game for up to 4 players where each player is directing an archaeological team in a jungle site full of temples, treasures, and volcanoes. You compete with other player's teams of workers to get the most points from bigger temples, or matching sets of treasures.

I play board games every week through a group so I have played Takal, lost cities, and Nexas Ops. While these game have the theme they don't really award you based on exploration. Takal gets the closest where you have to move your pieces higher to score better. I think the closest and a very easy game to learn would be Settlers of the Stone Age. Your a prehistoric tribe who has to learn how to survive in the "new world." You have to explore the world to expand your tribe, gain better clothes, improve your hunting skills, and be able to build better shelter.
