In what sense? In theater it means not getting too pretensious and sticking to real feelings and experience and is similar to method acting. It means avoiding putting on many of the affectations that some directors and actors push for.
In life orientation It is not just a question of facts but one of philosophical inclination.
A realist looks for a balance between the optimistic and pessimistic inclinations, between too positive or too negative and this means a broader viewpoint and one that tries to be closer to what is realistic and appropriate to the situation.
To use the cliche glass example:
A optimist says the glass is half full.
A pessimist says it is half empty.
A realist says it is both.
A lawyer asks who they should sue for the emotional distress and who they can bill for the time.

An optomist is someone who always tries to see the positives in every thing. Their glass is half full. Dreams are a part of their life, wishing and hoping they will come true. They never ask ''Are we there yet?'' because they live for the moment, enjoying life.
A pessimist is someone who always sees the negatives in every thing. Their glass is half empty. Dreams are never given a second thought as they are visions which bring false hopes. They always want to know ''Are we there yet?'' as a long trip is tiresome and unpleasurable to them.
A realist only sees what is and accepts it. Their glass is neither half full or half empty. They just see a glass with a liquid in it. Realist are those who do not search for answers in a dream, they try to justify every thing with an equation, they subjectify every thing with a reasonable answer, they drive down the road not asking ''Are we there yet?'' because the trip they are taking is a simple matter of distance verses time needed to drive it. They don't expect anything positive but accept it if it comes. They don't expect anything negative but with deal with it when it comes.
There is a little bit of a realist in every optomistic and pessimistic person. Yet there is never any optomism or pessimism in a realist.
Give me an optomistic person and tomorrow will be a fantasy. Give me a pessimistic person and tomorrow will never come. Give me a realist and tomorrow is only one more day in life.

It depends on the subject. In theatre realism is the art of method acting and maintaining a sense of verisimilitude throughout the production. In other words, actors/actresses will try to bring up their memories of the past in order to experience the same things as their characters, this is called method acting.
In life, realism is just that. . .pertaing to being realistic not expecting too much, but leaving some hope for the future.
In a relationship someone being realistic probably means that they are looking for an out and no longer want to be involved in that relationship.

Well, I consider MYSELF a "realist", & to me it means dealing with things as they ARE- without wishing they were some way else- and adjusting to those circumstances as best I can. Any "changes" I would want to make to a given situation- I would make through ME. -I wouldn't go out & try to "change the world" head on (More simply put; I try to make the World a better "place"- by working to become a better person.

They rely on the facts. They are not overly optimistic or negative. They are not strong believers in positive thinking but strong logic.
