I know this is probably a dumb question, but I'm taking my test on the 20th of April and during the five hour course the instructor said that parallel parking and 3 point turns aren't the complete tests. Then my mother says that hitting a curb is an accident and you'll fail automatically but when she took it (and failed five times, mind you) she never had the point system that we have now in NYS - not using a blinker is five points off, running a stop sign is 55 points, you can only get 30 points at most before you fail...

And I was just wondering if I did hit it but managed to do everything else right (because that's the one thing I always mess up) if I'd pass.

NYS - New York State. Not city. About three hours north of NYC.

Not only is the driving test a demonstration of the ability to drive, more importantly it's to ensure the safety of others around us - particularly "the innocent bystander" and the examiner has to be confident of this.

Therefore I'd say that where kerbs are involved, it's a matter of circumstance and the level of impact that determine whether or not it's considered dangerous.

For the record:

I screwed up a couple of times when I took my test (many years ago, when a guy with a white flag walked in front of a car) but I still passed.

Who was the examiner? Stevie Wonder.

It really depends on the officer giving the test. I didn't hit anything on my parallel park, but I was also about 3-4feet from the curb (yes, i avoid parallel parking at all cost). I passed fine. Just becareful. My guess is that they watch your safety alot more than your ablity on the parallel. And just don't run the stop sign..that's bad.

I would say yes because no one hits curbs when they drive. And say you were on a normal busy street and someone was standing on the edge of the sidewalk and you hit the curb, you'd hit them. Basically, hitting the curb shows you really don't know how to drive that well.

By the way, NYS? You mean NYC? As in New York City.. it's not New York Sity....?

It depends on the state of course, but usually yes, it would be considered an automatic fail.

I'd guess if you ran over it that would be bad.
But using it as a guide to find your distance from the curb sould be fine.
Just act like you meant to do it, and don't go "Oops" and give that funny smile people make when the make a mistake.

Act like you meant to do EVERYTHING you do. Mistake or not.
