This is what I have:

12000+x+1.25x=48000
x+1.25x=48000-12000
x+1.25x=36000
x+x=36000/1.25
2x=28800
x=28800/2
x=14400

The correct answer is 16000, but what did I do wrong? It's probably something really simple and I've missed it.

Thanks.

Ok. The problem is what you did was on step 4, when you divided both sides by the 1.25. You can't do that unless you're dividing everything on both sides, whereas you left the first x as it was.

What I would have done, starting from step 3 would have been:

x + 1.25x = 3600
2.25x = 36000
x= 36000/2.25
x= 16000

what i did was add the two x's on the left side together before dividing. (think of just an "x" as having a coefficient of 1)

You did wrong at step 4:

x+1.25x=36000
x(1+1.25) = 36000
2.25 x = 36000
x = 36000/2.25
x = 16000

You screwed up on line 4.

x +1.25x = 36000 so far so good but next line should be:
2.25x = 36000 (1x + 1.25x)
x = 36000/2.25 = 16000 tadaaaaa

You cannot take off the 1.25 off the x when there is still another term on that side of the equation.
Instead, you should have added like terms.
So, continuing from step 4

2.25x=36000 (Since x is like 1x)
x=36000/2.25
x=16000.

Your problem is that you didn't combine the x-terms before you divided by 1.25. This is what you should do:

(1)x+1.25x=36000
(1+1.25)x = 36000
2.25x=36000
x = 36000/2.25
x=16000

12000+x+1.25x=48000
x+1.25x=48000-12000

x is also the same as 1x therefore...

1x+1.25x=36000
2.25x=36000
x=36000/2.25
x=16000

Let me do it my way & see if we get the same answers...

12,000 + x + 1.25x = 48,000

Combine like terms & subtract 12,000 from both sides.

12,000 + 2.25x = 48,000 - 12,000
-12,000

2.25x = 36,000

Divide both sides by 2.25

x = 16,000

Had you combined the x + 1.25x instead of dividing, you would've gotten the correct answer. Remember to simplify the equation as much as you can before trying to solve it!!

12000 + x + 1.25x = 48000

12000 + 2.25x = 48000

12000 + 2.25x - 12000 = 48000 - 12000

2.25x = 36000

2.25x / 2.25 = 36000 / 2.25

x = 36000 / 2.25

x = 16000

12000+x+1.25x=48000
x+1.25x=48000-12000
x+1.25x=36000
x+x=36000/1.25 >>>> wrong wrong
2x=28800
x=28800/2

the correct one is:

12000+x+1.25x=48000
x+1.25x=48000-12000
2.25x=36000
x=36000/2.25

the first three steps were correct but the fourth step was wrong. It is 1+1.25 instead of just 1 .25 because you are adding another "x" to the problem. Other than that you did great. You should get the write answer after that.
