I'm doing a school project whre I have to make a model of an island, based upon the island in The Island of Blue Dolphins. I'm not qiute sure how to make it, and when I Googled "how to make a model of an island", it came up with nothing. Does anybody have any helpful ideas? Thanks.

i read that book! i also read zia, it's the sequil. first try to make a model of a dolphin suning itself, since that was the discription of the island. make it in earthly tones though. use clay for the model. near the bottom of the dolphin make it more like land instead of a tail. don't forget the cliffs and discriptions in the book! around it make water.

good luck!

If it is only a school project I suggest you take a plastic trough that is about three inches deep and having length and breadth 15'' x 12" approx. Use adhesive to stick an empty plastic ice cream cup upside down in the centre of the trough. Now on the base of the ice cream cup apply some more adhesive and stick a Thermocol sheet (of irregular omelet shape) of approx diameter 4". Now cover this thermocol piece with a green water-proof sheet and use your imagination to pin on match-sticks dressed up with strips of green and brown paper to look like trees and coloured modelling clay to make fake hills on your island. Fill the trough with blue ink coloured water.

i suggest you find a color photo of the island and surroundings for your model. the island itself can be made with playdoh and you can stick in some trees or whatever the island is covered with before it dries. the water can be made from a reflective type paper/foil blue green color. mold the paper to resemble the ocean. i suggest creating this on a board of some kind.

try googling the island of the blue dolphins for your example.

The choice of materials and method is going to depend on the sort of size you are aiming at.

Very small: clay... self-firing , Fimo...
Small: papier maché, on it's own or laid over a rough outline of card strips or chickenwire.
Larger: chickenwire or light scrap-wood shell overlaid with plaster bandages (Mod-roc or similar)
Or carved layers of expanded foam, (various builders insulation boards...)

If you could give me a clue, I could be more specific.
Try hunting for model railway/railroad scenery techniques.

You could make a diorama.
Take a shoe box and then go to the Rag Shop and get blue paint and little plastic things oh yeah and some sand from the beach.
You could go to the beach and get little things too.

-Good Luck
I hope you get and A+
