i read that it was beacause he fought aong side the british in the american revolution, is that true?

As I recall, Joseph Brant (a proper noun and name) had been educated by the whites to the point that he was able to converse terms easier. Often, Indian names could not be pronounced by any of the white settlers and it is my guess the chief was named thusly.

I had read of Joseph Brant so many years ago, but cannot recall much more about him.

His mother remarried a widower named Brant Canagaraduncka, who was a sachem of the Caughnawaga tribe.

Presumably he received the name from his mother's 2nd husband, Brant Canagaraduncka.
