Moth lay their eggs on woolens and other natural fibers. The larvae hatch and much on the fibers. Depending how long they munch before pupating into moths again, the damage to the fiber will vary. The moths seem to vector in on dirty fibers, body oil, old foot spots, etc. This is why it is highly recommended to clean wool items regularly (even carpets and rugs) and to store them clean and protected (either by wrapping and/or using repellents.

Lightly damaged areas can be rewoven, so it behooves one to protect clothing and fiber items and to inspect often.
