My 86 firebird has poor connections so it drains my battery, and i think it may need a new starter. How do i tell if it needs a new starter(are there any definete signs) and how much should it cost to replace both things?

Poor connections don't drain a battery. Bad starters can have a hard time turning the engine over, or not engage all the time. The starter is kind of tricky to get in and out on your car. it's a pretty tight fit, but doable. It's around $120 for a rebuilt.

most auto parts stores will check your battery for free. Some of the tests can also check your alternater. If these are fine, then check all the connections to starter.Sometimes, the corrosion that builds up on the battery terminals can cause a loss of voltage flow from the battery.make sure the connections are clean and protected with a battery protection spray/gel.You can also use petroleum jelly.

i own a repair shop and unless you have the tools to check it with you really wont know but if you,ll take it by any auto zone store or advance auto parts they can check it free of charge for you ,and tell you if its the alternator or the battery causing this to happen, its a pretty good way to find out whats wrong with one without spending a lot of money on it,good luck i hope this helps.
