Depends on the hotel and service. Go for the higher end hotels like Mandalay bay. Some have VIP check in. Caesars Palace is great too.

For one, they don't make you stand there. If you see a long line at check in, go to the bell desk, have them hold your bags. Find something to do for a couple of hours, then go back when the line is shorter. Unlike what someone else said, LV hotels do not over sell their rooms. As a matter of fact they always hold rooms in reserve just in case high rollers decide to drop in(they do every day)
The reason the desk clerk is typing away is that "almost" every person that checks into a LV hotel is making "special requests" - If you just walk up and hand them your >ID and CC< you will have your rooms keys in less than one minute.
Then again, if it was just you and they made you stand there. >Were you rude?< He/she may have been trying to see if the dungeon and a bed of nails was available. >just kidding, I think<
"vegasdog" may have something there, Tetris is a possibility.
What we do to avoid those lines is.
#1-arrive Sunday through Thursday
#2-arrive at an off hour>avoid 1pm - 7pm
If you have to arrive Friday or Saturday(especially Friday since many LV hotels do not allow Saturday arrivals) is check in around 11am or wait until 7pm or later. Even if they don't have a room for you early, most hotels will go ahead and check you in. Then you can come back later and just pick up your keys from a designated location(person/desk) with no wait.
We go to LV 2-3 times a year for 2 weeks or more at a time and have for over 20 years. Even though we have lots of time, I hate to stand in lines just as much as the next guy, we do everything possible to avoid lines. >We will be in LV from June 6th until the 29th, and will be checking in 5 times, only one should be a problem and I'm already planning how to get around the long lines< >(Why 5 times? - $127 total for 23 nights is why!)

You know, I wondered the same question. I work in a hotel in California, and I know it takes about a minute to check someone in who has a existing reservation. Someone that is a walk-in, maybe five minutes, tops. When I went to the Stratosphere, there were three people ahead of me in line and it took 30 minutes to check in. Absolutely ridiculous! My boss would fire each and every person at our front desk if we took that long!

Depends when you are there. If there's a conference or something in town, or it's just a regular Friday afternoon, they are probably typing incessently to find you a room somewhere in the building. (Just like airlines, they all oversell.) Or, they might be typing incessently to find you a better room than the one that was automagically assigned by the computer.
Or maybe they're just playing Tetris.

Because the strip hotels are too big, and most people working behind those counters have never that job before.
