Maybe if all prisons were like this one
there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders.
Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until
it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so
they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things
taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

I don't know about 8 years. And forcing them in to pay us back? They didn't choose to be on welfare, their parents did. I think anyone not graduating into college or some form of higher education should be conscripted for 4 years, and then be given assistance with education. Gangs exist because the members can't provide for themselves. Get them a college education and the experience the military offers and that could be changed. Same with illegal immigrants. 6 year service and citizenship. I agree with your basis, but perhaps the politics of whiny liberals is under thought in your statement. I wish the government would stop being so "kind hearted" and be more realistic. Kindness is good but our deficit shows we need to change something. As said above, you will have to provide for these people. That alone is expensive.

My boyfriend has been saying that for YEARS. I have been absolutely shut off to even entertaining the idea. I was like "no, the military will be stronger if it has only people that wanna be there" but when you say it like that....why shouldn't they?? And we seemed to have done better in wars passed that sent just about any able bodied soldier into the fray. But a lot of lives were lossed. But I guess the baby boomers could credit their existense to combat. Yeah we are fighting a war now, and so people don't like talking about putting more soldiers into harms way. But I have many air force friends that are BEGGING to be sent away and they are passed up time and time again. Who knows...your son might not go and they have gained an education and experience so he can learn a valid trade other than drug trafficking.

Welfare should only go to the elderly,infirm/disabled/orphans and those uncared for/abused kids. Everyone else must work, train and actively pursue their quality of life...
Everyone has opportunity,free education
Those that don't pass muster can be placed into well supervised low level jobs and alter their job opportunities if they are willing to learn skills and responsibility... ...or starve,commit a crime and go to prisons where they work all day and do not get TV, cable, libraries, work-out equipment etc..

The federal Government was never designed to be every one's mamma ...did pioneers get fuel subsidies, $$because mother nature caused crop failure/floods/storm damage..housing, food stamps, and a medical treatment facility ...WELFARE is NOT a one time fix for a setback..it has become the greatest threat to our society as we breed generations of families "who don't gotta do nothing because the state/feds will help me get food/housing/reduced charges on my cable bill.just like they did 4 my parents ..just gotta get all the stuff into the system to collect..

The British army have objected to National Service since WW2 on the grounds that they are well trained professionals and they don't need to be saddled with a million deadbeats who don't want to be there.

I don't know if the US army wants a bunch of thugs, thieves and dealers.

The modern soldier needs to be a computer programmer, policeman and a diplomat. They cost many thousands to train. Its not just a question of shaving your head and stopping a bullet for your country anymore.

Or perhaps you can tell me which is worse, someone who robbed a 7-11 or someone who robbed 5000 employees of their retirement funds.

Or maybe you can tell me what's worse, someone who steals a car or the people who support dictators despite their brutal nature.

I knew many outstanding Marines who came out of poverty and broken homes.
The difference was their mothers made them go to school and behave themselves.

In my experience, the life of many of our "welfare" youths are already screwed up by the time they are old enough to join the military.

Of course, I do get to see primarily only the ones who end up in the system, so I admit to a bias.
