Undoubtedly, you should take either prepaid auto or taxi from the New Delhi Railway Station at such at odd hour. Pre-paid booths are operated and maintained by Delhi Traffic Police and what ever charge is required, is printed on the slip, which you are supposed to hand over to the driver on your reaching the destination. Never pay even a single rupee extra on any pretext whatsoever.

The safest thing in Delhi at that time of the night would be to take a pre-paid taxi. It is not advisable to take an Auto or a non pre-paid taxi.
Or if you have contacts / friends in Delhi you can ask them to book a car for you, the driver can pick you up at the railway station and drop you off at the airport.
Have a safe trip!!

The best option is that if you have a friend or relative in Delhi who can drive you at that odd time from the New Delhi railway station at 2 am. It will be easier for you to get a taxi at the time from the station itself but it will take a long time. So, try to be patient as Delhi unlike Chennai is very unpredictable and can take a long time for you to get to the airport or anywhere in Delhi. Good luck on your trip from Delhi to Chennai!

Dear Nitin There are buses from Palam airport, just outside terminal. These are meant for air travellers, which drops you at Cannaught Place. From there you can take auto which will charge around 20 ruppees...(you have to fixed the rate with driver). Or Just take auto till Dhaula Kuan. From Dhaula Kuaan you will find many buses up to new delhi railway station.
