there are bearings on the steering wheel shaft. also if it has tilt wheel there are 4 screws that hold there tilt mechanism together they get loose sometime and can cause this problem. to check either of these problems the steering wheel has to be removed. also check the steering coupling where the steering shaft couples to the steering gear box these go bad sometimes.

It has been a while since I took an F150 steering column apart but they had a bearing at the top of the column. It supposedly was a lifetime lubrication on it but when they went dry, they could lock the column on you. Has the steering column been feeling warmer than usual? If you feel heat about 4 to 5 inches from the back of the wheel on the column you have a bearing going bad.

its a little hard to know exactly without seeing it first hand, but is sounds like there is a problem in the steering gear box.
have you checked the ps fluid level. when low the pump will
cavitate causing noise and hard steering. if it is low add and blead the system by turning the steering wheel from lock to lock ( all the way left to right ) this will give a hell of a work out if the front wheels arent off the ground. then recheck level and try it.
