There are many causes of dark circles, from age, heredity, allergies, cold or sinus infection, bone structure and glasses which are not so commonly known.

If you would like to apply home remedies to reduce dark circles, here are some of my suggestions:
Buy a box of regular, old fashioned unflavored gelatin (e.g. Knox) from grocery store. Take a small cup or bowl and put in 1 teaspoon of the gelatin mix. Add one tablespoon of boiling water & stir for a minute. Test it on your wrist to make sure it is not too hot. Then, using a cotton ball, pat it under your eyes as you would an eye cream or gel. Go lie down and listen to some music, or take a bath & let it stay on for at least 30 minutes. Then just rinse it off.Gelatin is very high in Vitamin K & Biotin. It will not remove your dark circles on the first application (but you will notice a difference), but if you do it daily for a week, and then 2-3 times a week for maintenance, you should notice a drastic reduction in dark circles.

I think it's part heredity, part sleep deprivation. I've had circles since I was a teen, and excess sleep never seemed to help. I've tried cheap stuff (avon) and expensive stuff (clarins) and never saw a difference. So the only thing that's worked for me all these years has been cover up. I use "Maybelline Everfresh Concealer". Use a shade lighter than your actual skin tone. You could also try using a yellowish concealer...they say yellow neutralizes the color. If you're not going to do the makeup thing, I guess just stick to trying the sleep/hydration method.

Oh, and btw, the spoons and cucumbers are for bags (more like swollen or saggy skin) rather than circles (dark color).

there isnt much you can do if its due to genes. the best things you can do is try a bunch of stuff and see what works. when my eyes are puffy form crying or no sleep, i put a cucumber and aloe cream on them to sooth and cool they eyes. i always moisturize with a thick moisturizer (only under my eyes) and then put on concelar. you are a guy though so i can see how you might not wanna do that...mostof the creams dont work all that great, but theyre still worth trying.

Give your eyes a massage(with light pressure) in circular motions with Almond oil. My mom is 65 years old and she has got no signs of any dark patches as she does the same everynight.

Photoshop...

Ok, real answer, it could have to do with how much sleep you're getting. Get to bed earlier if that's the case.

If not there are many beauty products at your local pharmacy. Talk to one of the nice young ladies they have there to point you to a short-term (cover up) or long-term (mostly mystical make believe stuff) solution.
