How do you choose/get pokemon on Diamond and pearl?

Do you pick your pokemon for a list in the beguining? Do you have to Caputure one in battle? how do you get your pokemon?

Diamond and Pearl begins in Twinleaf Town. After viewing a television report about disturbances at a distant lake by a red Gyarados, the protagonist and his/her rival travel together to investigate the local lake. They spot Professor Rowan, an expert in Pokemon evolution, and the protagonist's second rival, who is the playable character not selected. After a short discussion the pair exits from the lake, leaving a briefcase behind. When they are attacked by wild Starly, the protagonist and his or her rival examine the case. The player is then given a choice between three Pokemon found in the briefcase, Turtwig, Chimchar or Piplup.

After this the professor notices the bound you have with your Pokemon and lets you keep it. To catch Pokemon just weaken them and throw a pokeball at them.

at the begining of the game u get to select one of three pokemon to start with.
after that u go around looking for wild pokemon, battle them, but don't kill them just catch them when they're really weak so u don't waste a poke ball.

you first get a starter pokemon in your hometown then you get pokeballs and catch pokemon. You can catch legendaries near the end of the game.

you need to GET TURTWIG! in case you look at it, he would be great effective to his rival. His rival would be a fireplace, and the 0.33 evolution of turtwig is grass floor. floor is great effective to fireside, so all of it works out. the 2nd may be the hearth dude (Chimchar). The piplup 0.33 evolution is water steel, making chimchar's hearth assaults frequently effective to the empoleon. The 0.33 being piplup. Piplup is solid against maximum running shoes by its steel status at its 0.33 evolution. against the elite 4 and rival, empoleon gets owned.
